EXERCHAIR is an innovative research project focused on developing an accessible exergame for wheelchair users. Embedded within the Sport Innovation Campus (a collaboration between Howest and Sport Vlaanderen), the project builds on existing technologies such as the iPlay setup and the mocap4all tracking framework. The ultimate goal: promoting physical activity for people with physical disabilities through playful, inclusive technology.
Why EXERCHAIR?
People with physical disabilities face a higher risk of inactivity, often leading to health issues and social isolation. Yet, sports participation within this group remains low. Traditional exergames are rarely adapted to their needs: the technology isn’t suitable, gameplay is too complex, or the infrastructure isn’t accessible.
EXERCHAIR aims to change that. We’re developing an exergame that does work for wheelchair users — both technologically and motivationally. And we’re doing it in close collaboration with the target group and professionals through a comprehensive co-creation process.
What are we doing?
- Technological innovation
We’re adapting existing motion tracking so that seated movements — with or without a wheelchair — are accurately recognized. We’re also ensuring the system is compatible with mobile devices, making it usable beyond the campus setting. - Co-creation and game design
Through workshops, brainstorming sessions, and playtests with wheelchair users, therapists, and game experts, we’re designing exergames that are fun, accessible, and engaging. We’re exploring both single-player and multiplayer modes where players with different mobility levels can play together. - Testing and feedback
Our prototypes are tested extensively in rehabilitation centers, schools, and sports clubs. Input from players, therapists, and coaches helps us build games that are both enjoyable and effective. - Guidelines and knowledge sharing
All insights gathered are compiled into practical guidelines for game developers, therapists, and educators. We share our findings through demos, workshops, and a final showcase event on campus.
Impact
EXERCHAIR makes sports and physical activity more accessible for a group that is often overlooked. The impact is far-reaching:
Increased physical activity and improved health for wheelchair users
Greater confidence and social participation
New tools for therapists, teachers, and coaches
Inspiration for game developers to design more inclusively
