Panamarenko’s Workshop is a virtual reality proof of concept developed as part of the Proeftuin Media XR & 5G project. In collaboration with the Panamarenko Foundation, DAE Research and students from the Digital Arts & Entertainment (DAE) bachelor programme explored how immersive technology can be used to present cultural heritage in a more engaging and accessible way.
The project set out to test whether a VR game could work as a meaningful addition to museum settings and cultural events. A key focus was creating an experience that feels approachable for younger audiences, especially Gen Z, as a way of introducing them to Panamarenko’s work, while remaining accessible to long-time Panamarenko fans who may be less familiar with XR or games.
The result is a single-player VR game in which players are asked to restore two of Panamarenko’s works: the Meikever and the Prova Car. The game follows a clear, task-based structure. Players work through a to-do list and complete objectives using intuitive VR interactions, keeping the experience easy to understand while still encouraging players to spend time with Panamarenko’s ideas and constructions.
The proof of concept was created by one student team over the course of a full semester. Throughout the project, the team worked closely with DAE Research staff and received weekly feedback to refine both the gameplay and its connection to Panamarenko’s way of thinking. A visit to the Panamarenko House played an important role in this process, helping the students better understand the artist, his work, and the context in which it was created.
Panamarenko’s Workshop does not aim to replace physical artworks or exhibitions. Instead, it explores how VR can complement existing displays by offering visitors an additional way to engage with artistic ideas through interaction and play.
The project demonstrates how immersive technology can support cultural organisations that want to experiment with new forms of audience engagement, while also giving students hands-on experience at the intersection of art, technology and applied research.
