PrototAIpe

PrototAIpe is a research project exploring how AI-based tools can support indie game developers during the early prototyping phase of game production. In an increasingly competitive industry where small teams must do more with fewer resources, the project investigates how AI can help accelerate ideation, improve communication, and streamline early development workflows.

The research focuses on practical applications of generative AI for tasks such as concept creation, coding support, and rapid prototype development. By enabling faster iteration and earlier decision-making, these tools can help studios refine ideas more efficiently and communicate concepts more clearly to team members, publishers, and clients.

Practical Research for Indie Studios

The project builds on earlier AI research within DAE Research and translates this knowledge into workflows tailored specifically to indie game development. A central part of the research compares prototype creation processes with and without AI support, analysing differences in efficiency, workflow, and collaboration.

PrototAIpe is developed in close collaboration with educators, students, and industry partners to ensure the findings remain relevant to real production environments and the needs of smaller studios that often lack dedicated R&D capacity.

Knowledge Sharing and Impact

The outcomes of the project will contribute both to the indie games industry and to education within the Independent Game Production curriculum at DAE. Through documented workflows, case studies, and practical recommendations, PrototAIpe aims to provide a clearer understanding of where AI can offer meaningful value during prototyping, while keeping the focus on creativity and experimentation.
