Experimenting with AI for VP Background Generation
For the shoot of A Very Wild Boar, experimentation was done to explore the possibilities of using an entirely AI-generated background within a Virtual Production workflow. As Virtual Production technologies continue to evolve, the project offered an opportunity to test how generative tools can contribute to environment creation and visual storytelling in a production setting.
The experiment focused on investigating how AI-generated imagery could be developed and adapted for use as a virtual background during the shoot, while considering both creative potential and practical integration into the production process. This included exploring questions around visual consistency, workflow efficiency, and how generated environments interact with lighting, camera movement, and the overall scene.
By combining experimentation with hands-on production experience, the process became a way to better understand both the possibilities and current limitations of integrating AI-generated assets into Virtual Production.
The experimentation resulted in an aesthetically pleasing final outcome and offered valuable insights into the role AI can play within Virtual Production workflows. While creating the background entirely through AI ultimately took more time than a traditional matte painting workflow, the process proved useful as a rapid ideation tool. It allowed for quick iteration, testing different visual directions, and exploring concepts early in development.
To conclude this experiment, the suggested workflow would be to rely on traditional matte painting creation methods and only using AI to quickly generate and evaluate ideas to iterate on your existing concept.
Below, we share a short breakdown of the process and some insights into how this background was developed and brought into the final shoot!
